Vincent Kompany, Manchester city’s defender cum captain who is a force to reckon with in the club and the English premier league as well has announced that he is leaving the club after successfully completed 11 seasons to become a player-manager at his former Belgian team – Anderlecht.
The defender announced his departure a day after his team’s 6-0 win over Watford in the FA CUP finals, making them clinch a domestic treble for the club, an unexpected feat in England.
“As overwhelming as it is, the time has come for me to go. And what a season to bow out,” Kompany said on his social-media channels. “I feel nothing but gratefulness. I am grateful to all those who supported me on a special journey, at a very special club.”
Kompany who joined city shortly after it was taken over by the Abu Dhabis’ became an instant defensive hero in city’s back line. He brought the same form he had in Hamburg(his former club) and teamed up nicely with Yaya Toure, Aguero, David silva. Kompany’s arrival also witness city’s dominance in the league as Manchester city ‘s defence became a dominant force to recon with.
Vincent Kompany has made a total of 360 appearances for manchester city and will take his his bow out as a winner of 4 premier league titles, 4 league cups, 2 FA cups and 2 community shields. most importantly, He will forever be remembered as a great leader and a voice about both football related matters and what not.
City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak commented that.
“There have been many important contributors to Manchester City’s renaissance, but arguably none are more important than Vincent Kompany, He defines the essence of the club. For a decade he has been the lifeblood, the soul, and beating heart of a supremely talented squad. A booming voice in the dressing room yet a quiet and measured ambassador off it, Vincent can be as proud of himself as we are of him.”
Kompany has been a victim of football injuries for years, but through-out this season his fitness has been superb and he has played a crucial role in Manchester city’s treble run. His spectacular long-range strike finished the 1-0 leicester league game, which set his team up to retain the league title for the first time in city’s history.
Kompany began his football career in Anderlecht at age of six.
“I choose to be grateful for the past but remain ambitious and driven for the future, For the next three years, I will take up the role of player-manager of Anderlecht. Belgium’s finest,”
he wrote in an open letter.
“This may come as a surprise to you. It’s the most passionate yet rational decision I’ve ever made.”
Kompany earlier had a meeting with Marc Coucke (Anderlecht chairman) and Michael Verschueren (sporting director) last year however he was offered the player-manager job few weeks ago.
“I shared my thoughts and listened to their vision for the future: ambitious, courageous and determined to get back to No. 1, I offered my help, no strings attached, should they need it.”
“I want to share my knowledge with the next purple generations, With that, I will also put a bit of Manchester in the heart of Belgium. This is no goodbye. It’s a see you later.”
We earlier reported that Rihad Mahrez threatened to leave the Etihad stadium over lack of playing time he has received this campaign under Pep Guardiola.
